A lot of girls chop their hair off to rebel. Sure enough, Emma Watson did it just because she could. Which wasn't always the case...

The 20-year-old Harry Potter star tells British Vogue that she was "contractually obligated" to keep her hair long—Hermione started off with a head full of uncontrollable curls, remember?—and refrain from getting a tan (England, you know?).

Watson was cast as the clever wizard-in-training when she was 9, so that makes for a lot of blow-drying over the years.

"All the normal things girls do, I couldn't," the December cover girl told the mag. "So when I got the chance to change my appearance, this is what I did."
