Ana De La Regurea Interview
Q: Who was your character and what did he or she do?
A: Vanessa Cruz is a con artist. She frames people. That is what she does and what she has been doing for the last six years of her life because she wants to claim revenge for what they did to her husband. He is dead, but she is out for revenge for the people who framed her husband.
It depends on the person, particularly on the show. She wants to kill all of them. In the case of men, she seduces them. She gets dressed as a Goth model or super sexy. She is having a relationship with a woman for six months because she is the assistant of the next guy she will frame. She is pretending she is the girlfriend to steal her identity. And then she kills them. Not out for money, but at the same time, she does defraud them so she can make a living. She will only kill people who have harmed someone else. She has a good heart.
Q: Why do you think Reddington has targeted your character?
A: Because I am excellent at what I do. She is very precise and is very meticulous in her work. She is a loner and very independent and focused on what she wants. She has nothing else to lose right now. She does not have kids.
Because she is in a moment where at the end of the show she needs to frame this guy and in order to not have witnesses she has to kill her girlfriend, Abby. At the end she does not kill her and now she is a fugitive. Before no one knew she existed and no one had any trace of her. And after the last scene, police come to this hotel room where I am with this last guy. I am about to kill and I am supposed to kill him and Abby is supposed to die. That's why I think she is not a bad person. So now Reddington knows she has two options: become a fugitive and get caught or work for Reddington and get protection.
Q: Then Reddington wants something from her?
A: He wants her to work occasionally for him whenever he needs her. I think she is not like him but they both know how to do this kind of stuff. She is very smart.
Q: How did you prepare to portray this villain?
A: She is a character that is fun, and I am studying a lot right now because tomorrow I have the most important scenes. In every scene she is acting differently. In one scene she is Goth and in other moments she is with her girlfriend and trying to be sweet and then she is cold and precise and quiet.
How she acts depends on the scenario. Right now I am working on these last scenes where the audience is going to understand why she does this. It is kind of like her real personality and we see a little bit of vulnerability in her.
Q: She sounds complex, is she?
A: She was a sweet woman and completely in love with her husband. She was a hard-working woman and dedicated to her husband and now she is heartbroken and very focused.
Q: Do you think anyone will ever be able to outsmart Reddington?
A: I don't think my character would, if that happens it would need to be someone older than him. He is beyond everyone. It would have to be someone with more experience. Sometimes experience has more weight than intelligence. I don't think I would be able to.
Q: Do you think anyone could?
A: I don't know. That is what the show is about.
Q: What is it that appeals so much about playing a villain?
A: I think we all have that dark side. It is fun to go with the bad and you sometimes feel those emotions when you are upset, so being able to play it in fiction is fun.
Q: What is it like working with The Blacklist cast?
A: I didn't have that many scenes with the permanent cast because most of my scenes are completely separate. I had very few moments with Megan; we were outside one day and were chatting. In one scene I am escaping and she comes right after me. I just work with Reddington's associate Mr. Kaplan.
Q: What was your experience like on set?
A: I loved it. It is an intense show. They are very effective. The director was a lot of fun he applauded us whenever we finished a scene. It is a great vibe on set.
Q: Does Vanessa live?
A: Yes she does.
Q: So she could come back?
A: The last scene is his associate saying he wants to work with you. I am so excited I hope that I then get introduced to Red.
